Bowmanville is situated approximately 75 km (47 mi) east of Toronto along Highway 2 in Southern Ontario. Originally covered by farmland, Bowmanville's increasing population has established a vibrant downtown core eliminating most of the farmland. Bowmanville, however, is still surrounded by rural areas with Lake Ontario at the south end of town. The downtown area is home to many retail shops, restaurants and entertainment. One of the town's most popular attractions is the Bowmanville Zoo. This is Canada's oldest private zoo and home to many celebrity animals who have appeared in Hollywood movies. For outdoor enthusiasts, Darlington Provincial Park offers numerous recreational activities such as hiking, swimming, fishing, camping and more. Bowmanville is a family-friendly town and this can be seen at many of their annual events such as their Fabulous Fifties Festival. Feeling the need for speed? Located about 25 km (15 mi) north of Bowmanville is the Mosport International Raceway. The racetrack hosts both minor and major racing events.
